Membership Discussion

Hi-

I guess I can start the Nomenus Membership discussion myself.

For me, there are a couple of issues.

The first is that Nomenus was formed in an era of Identity Politics. There also was a history of movements started by gay people being co-opted, and this was part of the reasoning that led to the choice of “gay identified man” as the parameter for membership. At that time, in the mid-80's, it was still radical to identify as “gay”. It was even more radical for men (of any stripe) to band together to form a group created to nurture and support one another. There was a feeling among the pioneers that we needed to learn to do everything for ourselves, and that this self-actualization could be manifested only in a group of likes.

To me, one of the most sacred tenets of Nomenus is the way in which we make decisions. We decide on the basis of true consensus, whereby the group can not implement a decision if there is even one person opposed (“blocking”). There are many decisions that would have been made long ago if we were to use “majority rule” as our decision process. As far as I can tell, one of these would have been a change in the membership policy.

It is true that there has been incredible change in the time since Nomenus was formed. Identifying as a particular “sexuality” has been supplanted by a system of affinity and acceptance that blurs a line once distinct. As a social construct, I identify as a “gay man”, in such places as my job, an outdoor group to which I belong, and Nomenus. It is still radical to do so in my job, where that alone is more than most can handle, much less all of the incredible variety of “sexualities” that my friends and acquaintances exhibit. It is markedly less so in Nomenus, where really I am known solely as Rula.

Even more distressing to some members of Nomenus is the fluidity of gender. What does being a “man” mean? At the last Great Circle, one member stated that he could not view another member as a “man”. How tightly should Nomenus parse the meaning of this one word? How can it be defined, as it is unlikely to pass consensus to change it, so as to not exclude. Is that even possible? Do we end up with some unreadable statement in excruciating detail that says effectively nothing? (Like some people view my sentences)

I have witnessed what I consider unmistakable displays of sexism on the part of Nomenus members, especially when they are telling us “how it is” in other communities of which they would have only superficial knowledge (e.g. In the “lesbian” community). “Why should Nomenus have to change?”, they posit, “when other communities still exclude on the basis of gender.” I have seen the taint of exclusivity and entitlement demonstrated by some members – at least partially for which I blame the Reagan administration when it became socially acceptable to be selfish – with a sort of smugness about the continued denial of membership to others in our community. They are correct, and I guess they can be smug about it, “membership” will not yet (ever?) be consensed to change.

On a practical front, what does “membership” mean? Lots of people use its limits as an excuse not to be involved. We get many comments from other communities, such as in Tennessee where Nomenus is referred to as “No women us”. Would a change in membership mean that there would be more people actually doing work for Nomenus and the Sanctuary? (I fear not) What do people in the Wolf Creek Sanctuary community want to do that not being a member of Nomenus precludes them from doing?

As with the last time that Great Circle met in Portland, I am proposing that at least half a day of the Circle be open to the larger community for a discussion of “membership”, and more importantly, how Nomenus can welcome and encourage the contributions of non-members.

Membership has been discussed in other posts with considerable rancor. I hope that the discussion in this can be inclusive without attack, and passionate without oppression.
Wolf Creek Summer Men's Gathering

Hi-

Spiritual Gathering for Radical Faeries
(the Summer Men’s Gathering)

The Spiritual Gathering for Radical Faeries is often defined by its limitations. Since its first incarnation it has been open to gay men resonating with the words “spiritual”, “gathering”, “radical” and “faeries”. If you are not a gay man, we hope that you will excuse receiving this invitation and we ask your understanding that we are trying to send this to everyone who identities as a gay man, and who may wish to attend the gathering.

Actually the success of these gatherings dating from 1979 can be seen in the explosion of faerie events for all, especially at the Sanctuary in Wolf Creek that was purchased to have our own property on which to hold the Spiritual Gatherings for Radical Faeries. The SGRF (Wolf Creek Summer Men's Gathering) will happen this year from Friday the 13th of June through the eve of the Summer Solstice, June 20th. It will be followed immediately by a Solstice Celebration open to all, and then by the Nomenus Great Circle, the semi-annual business meeting for the Church of Nomenus, from Sunday, June 22nd through Tuesday, June 24th.

Spiritual Gathering for Radical Faeries 2008 presents a Return to Magick

A Return to the indefinable Energy that bonds us as Faeries. This practice, born in 1979, when it was not known who would feel called to a “Spiritual Gathering for Radical Faeries”, sparked the tradition of gay men gathering to create an Intentional Community to explore and re-create our visions, dreams, his-stories, and beings in a loving, supportive, heart centered space.

A return to Magick. We commune to discover and share our innate gifts and energies, imbuing all of our actions with resonance, grace, generosity, and a connection to the divine spirit within each of us. We congregate in ritual to raise sacred energy for the healing of ourselves and the Earth. We meditate in solitary calm, freeing ourselves of the strictures that impede our true beings.

A return to Radical. Our instinctual essence is radical. It is radical for men to relate to one another in loving, non-competitive ways. It is radical for men to wear skirts and hold one another in embrace. It is radical to celebrate our erections, both priapic and from labors. It is radical to gather in kindred spirit, making decisions on the basis of consensus. It is radical to give everyone the space to give voice without judgment.

A return to Fabulousness. The loving radiance that shines from each of us as we celebrate one another. Dressing for dinner, the fabulous No-Talent show, the mostly animal (I mean annual) Miss Wolf Creek pageant. The spontaneous performances and the enraptured participatory audiences that experience them. The sweet release of a breath held too long while hiding our true selves in the outside world.

A return to Exploration. Our intentional community gives us the freedom and space to move outside our usual patterns and truly explore what it means to be a radical faerie. To open to the New: new people, new ideas, new feelings, new ways of being, new ways to express ourselves, new behaviors. To reclaim the childlike wonder that lies dormant within us.

A return to Re-creation. We lavishly bestow upon ourselves the energy, the time and the space to nurture and actualize our evolution and creation.

A return to Sex. Putting the sensual back into consensual. We celebrate our human drive to procreate by our shared physical delight in one another, and by our progeneration of our divine faerie selves within our Gathering and within each of us in our travels afterward. A return to Freedom from Sexual Oppression, where each touch and desire is by mutual consent, and sexual expression protects and nurtures each himself and each other.

A return to Community. We gather in our Faerie village, joyously engaged in the everyday rituals of village life. We collectively cook communal meals, ensuring that individual dietary needs are met. Our generous loving energy assures equanimity in washing dishes, cleanup, and the myriad of tasks needed to support our village.

A return to Heart. From the daily morning Heart Circle through all of the day's activities, we share ourselves from the very center of our being. We uphold the principle that all of our communication is heart engaged so that every exchange between us nurtures both our hearts.

A return to Ritual. Assembling ourselves in a community determined space, time, and manner to raise group spiritual energy and have it move through/for/within us, celebrating our divine connections.

A return to Ourselves. What special feelings, thoughts, ideals, discussions, heart space, ways of being can we access only in Male Space? How do we relate to others not at or unable to attend the SGRF? How are the definitions of “men” and “gay” evolving? Does language itself limit our ability to share our identities and experiences? What happens to us after the SGRF?

What to bring:

A tent – the weather is perfect for outdoor sleeping. Special Needs (indoor) housing is available, but it quite limited in quantity. If you need this accommodation, please let the SGRF focalizers know as soon as possible. There are a limited number of tents available at the Land, if you would like to use one, please let us know. Lack of proper planning does not constitute Special Needs – showing up with nothing and/or no arrangements to take care of your sleeping space needs does not guarantee you a space.

For your tent – a tarp, a rainflap (yes, it does rain in June, although not reliably), ribbons, signs, a sling – something to make it unmistakably yours.

Bedding – sleeping bags, air mattresses, foam, pillows, blankets; the limited quantities of these on hand at the Sanctuary will be needed for Special Needs housing.

Personal care things – shampoo, conditioner, razor, toothbrush, towel, sunscreen, moisturizer, toothpaste, condoms, lube, handcuffs, insect repellent, personal sexual devices, teddy bears, makeup, nail polish, etc. We know that you will bring only bio-degradable and/or earth friendly products.

Clothes and other things to wear and share– Days are warm, nights can be cool. Bring appropriate footwear if you want to hike in the hills AND appear as a contestant in the Miss Wolf Creek pageant. The drag closet is available to fill in some missing items, but chances are that there won’t be a pair of ruby slippers in size 11 ½ EEE waiting for you here. Ditto for a pair of hiking boots in size 10 D. That size 20 cerise taffeta evening gown hanging in your closet at home would look fabulous at dinner one night.

A number for the No Towel Lint show. Drums for the drumming circle, maracas, tambourines, guitars, sweet voices for singing in harmony.

Boundless Good Energy – We know we don’t have to remind you about this. Caring, Support, Generosity, Sharing, Enthusiasm, Goodwill, and a host of other positive attitudes too numerous to list are the essence of Faerie existence. We gather to celebrate them with one another.

The small-as-we-can-possibly-make-it list of things you really can’t bring:

Your pet – sorry, but there are already caretaker familiars in residence here. New animals upset the balance and have the distinct possibility of creating problems. Please leave your familiars at home.

City attitude and expectations for City services: We hold gatherings in a rural remote area so that we can commune with Nature and each other. There is lousy cell phone reception here (Hey, it’s in the mountains!). Nomenus has only dial-up access to the Net, and that is used for business purposes. Although Grants Pass is only 25 miles away, do you really want to drive there for beer or a burger? The Wolf Creek General Store and the Circle of Wolves can supply your tobacco and beer/wine needs. Actually the Circle of Wolves, especially Nancy and Karen, are our special friends and loooooove visitors from the Sanctuary. They have an exciting array of good wines and beers, plus great outfits, frou-frou, and bric-a-brac.

Honey, while you’re sitting at your ‘puter, let us know you are coming. For the first time, you can email us your registration! Hallelujah! The SGRF has progressed to 1993! The email addy is wcsgrf@gmail.com. Please include your name (both fae and mundane), address, email address, telephone number, how many days you are planning to stay (and what they are), whether you are looking for or can offer a ride, and how you would like to help. Or, you can grab a pen and write all of this down, and mail it to: SGRF 2008 c/o Nomenus – P.O. Box 312, Wolf Creek, OR 97497-0312.

To reserve special needs space for the gathering, or for other questions, please contact 2008 SGRF Reina Toddmary – toddmary@toddbern.com or 541-866-2678, option #3.

We so look forward to your lovely self joining us for this too-fab event!!!

The Sanctuary needs a vehicle!

The Sanctuary at Wolf Creek is currently without a vehicle. The Land truck died several months ago, as did the only personal vehicle of the Caretaking Community. Neither vehicle has been left in the Sanctuary parking lot. : ) Also not in the parking lot is a vehicle which DOES work.

This is a serious situation that needs to be addressed. Emergency situations can arise at any time, as well as the regular ongoing need for food and propane. Visitors without their own transportation can't be picked up. Mail can't be gotten or sent.

Although visitors with vehicles have been helping as much as possible, it is not a workable solution to rely solely on them. I think it safe to say that the last thing any visitor would like to do is an extended shopping run into Grants Pass, especially if they are staying only a day or two.

One faerie has indicated that he will be donating a truck to the Sanctuary in the near future. This truck will serve the needs of the Sanctuary for a long time to come – it is in excellent mechanical condition. Until this truck is donated, however, there remains the need for a working vehicle.

There are a couple of ways that a vehicle could be made available for use at the Sanctuary.

One is a donation of a vehicle. Nomenus is a tax exempt organization, and can accept tax deductible donations to the extent allowed by law. My local NPR station has daily announcements about the fact that they can accept vehicles and give a tax credit to the donor. We can do the same thing. Although Nomenus has been the recipient of many spontaneous donations of non-working vehicles in the parking lot, in this case the donation should be a working and serviceable one.

You could also lend a vehicle to the Sanctuary. Nomenus will insure it, as well as cover any registration fees needed. Because of liability issues for Nomenus, in all cases the only driver(s) would be licensed and registered on the insurance, as well as being acceptable to the owner of the vehicle.

A third possibility is to rent a vehicle until one is donated. In calling around to rental agencies, the cost is prohibitively expensive. However, if you have a vehicle that you would rent to the Sanctuary for several months, we would be happy to look at that proposal.

Ideally the vehicle would be a truck with an open bed. This is due to the fact that propane can not be transported in an enclosed vehicle. Also worth considering is a car with a trailer hitch – the propane can be transported in the open trailer. But the Sanctuary will make do with whatever vehicle comes our way as long as it runs and can be legally registered.

If you have any questions, or need more information, please contact the Sanctuary at 541-866-2678 or email at nomenus@budget.net.

The Ron Paul “Revolution”, an Extreme Rightwing Threat

The Ron Paul “Revolution”, an Extreme Rightwing Threat

By STEVEN ARGUE

For the most part the Iowa caucuses were business as usual for the Democrat and Republican Parties. Among the Democrats, “Anti-war” and “pro-single payer health care” Democrat Dennis Kucinich put his support behind pro-war anti--single payer health care, Barrack Obama. Yet on the far right, anti-war Libertarian and Republican Ron Paul gained a stunning 10% of the vote.

Seeing the failure of the Democrats to deliver a candidate worth supporting; some left leaning individuals have been suggesting support to Ron Paul. One is anti-war Vietnam veteran Stan Goff, who suggested in his January 4, 2008 article ”Monkey Wrenching the System, Ron Paul’s Revolution” that people vote in the primaries for Ron Paul, switching party registration right away if they live in a state where such a move is necessary to vote in the Republican primaries.

At the root of the Ron Paul "revolution" is the dismantling of Social Security and the Department of Education as well as other basic social programs, and the elimination of worker and environmental protections. Advances like single payer health care? No way. Ron Paul's message is that you need to take care of yourself, and that there shouldn't be such government programs, nor such interference with private profit. While he puts forward reasons for not supporting going to war abroad, his domestic policies would ignite civil war at home.

In addition to pretending he's against all government, he's for the continued ban on same-sex marriage. He was one of the original co-sponsors of the "Marriage Protection Act".

On abortion, Ron Paul is against it and puts forward a “state rights” argument. It took the national Roe v Wade decision to legalize abortion. Getting rid of national protections for a woman’s right to choose is one way to move towards the banning of abortions.

In addition to his opposition to a woman’s right to choose, Ron Paul opposes any protections for women being sexually harassed on the job, saying they should just quit.

He's also a religious extremist who thinks that creationism should be taught in the schools.

On race, Ron Paul was one of 33 Congress members to vote against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, an act that was first passed to give Blacks in the south the right to vote. On a similar note, he says the Civil Rights Act violates the Constitution and impedes on individual liberties as well as states rights. Once again “state rights” are being used to defend Ron Paul’s racist and sexist positions. Speaking of Blacks in Washington DC he states in campaign literature, "95 percent of African Americans in are semi-criminal or entirely criminal".

Anyone who votes against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act is a racist. And you can spare me the Civil War era “states rights” rhetoric. Abraham Lincoln and the Union Army, including 200,000 Black soldiers, smashed the southern slavocracy, and this was a tremendous step forward. More recently the Voting Rights Act was passed, but if it were up to Ron Paul, it would be abolished.

No wonder the American Nazi Party has close relations with him (see letter from Nazi Commander Bill White below). In addition, Ron Paul has the support of other white supremacists such as David Duke, and has knowingly taken donations from former KKK Grand Wizard Don Black.

Hell would freeze over before I'd support Ron Paul. And being an atheist; that will be a long time.

There are plenty of candidates to the left of the Democrats worth considering supporting who oppose the war, would preserve public education and Social Security, who would provide single payer or socialized medicine, and who aren’t raving racist, homophobic, and sexist “Libertarian” fanatics. Why not look at them rather than someone from the loony right?

I discuss some of the campaigns that may be worth supporting in the following article:

The Case for Socialized Medicine in the United States,
And the Struggle to Achieve It

Or here is a different version of the same article:
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2008/01/93820.html

*****************
American Nazi Party Chief says Ron Paul is one of us

Bill White, commander of the American National Socialist Worker’s Party, aka The American Nazi Party, wrote the following on the Nazi Vanguard News Network:

Comrades:

I have kept quiet about the Ron Paul campaign for a while, because I didn’t see any need to say anything that would cause any trouble. However, reading the latest release from his campaign spokesman, I am compelled to tell the truth about Ron Paul’s extensive involvement in white nationalism.

Both Congressman Paul and his aides regularly meet with members of the Stormfront set, American Renaissance, the Institute for Historic Review, and others at the Tara Thai restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, usually on Wednesdays. This is part of a dinner that was originally organized by Pat Buchanan, Sam Francis and Joe Sobran, and has since been mostly taken over by the Council of Conservative Citizens.

I have attended these dinners, seen Paul and his aides there, and been invited to his offices in Washington to discuss policy.

For his spokesman to call white racialism a “small ideology” and claim white activists are “wasting their money” trying to influence Paul is ridiculous. Paul is a white nationalist of the Stormfront type who has always kept his racial views and his views about world Judaism quiet because of his political position.

I don’t know that it is necessarily good for Paul to “expose” this. However, he really is someone with extensive ties to white nationalism and for him to deny that in the belief he will be more respectable by denying it is outrageous — and I hate seeing people in the press who denounce racialism merely because they think it is not fashionable.

Bill White, Commander
American National Socialist Workers Party

*********
Poor Bill White. He’s having trouble with his brand of racism, anti-Semitism, mass extermination, and genocide not being "in fashion". But hey, you've got to thank the knuckleheaded Nazi for confirming our suspicions on Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan! -Steven Argue

Ride to Wolf Creek 10/20 or Zuni 10/27

Hi-

I am driving from the Los Angeles area (Costa Mesa) to Wolf Creek with my well behaved and sweet dog, Tish, Saturday morning October 20th. I am looking for faerie company for the trip. If you can help with driving, that’s great, and gas money is appreciated, though not necessary (No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds).

The route I will be taking is I-405 to I-5 to Wolf Creek. I can stop along the way, especially for a relief driver, and with sufficient inducement can be persuaded to stop for someone in the Bay Area. Extra points if this is at an East Bay BART station.

My return trip is probably before you would want to come back, since I am leaving on Saturday October 27th. If there is someone who would like a ride from Wolf Creek that day to points south, I would love the company.

Or if there is someone who is trying to get to Zuni Sanctuary for Samhain, at some point on the way from Wolf Creek to Albuquerque, who is able to travel on that day, please contact me.

The Call for Queer Magic: The Cauldron (September 21-23, Portland OR)

QUEER MAGIC: THE CAULDRON
September 21-23, Portland Oregon
An Urban Gatherette
to Vision, Plan, and Organize
Queer Magic 2008

THE CAULDRON is the crucible of creation
where vision quickens and thickens into form...

WE ARE Queer People of Spirit
of various sexes, genders, and orientations
who identify with the traditions and culture
of the Radical Faeries.

OUR VISION is
a pangender urban gathering
called Queer Magic
in Portland Oregon in 2008
where Faeries and friends
can come together to share
our various forms of magic
(which we define as everything we do
with passion and heart and awareness of Spirit).

OUR INTENTIONS are
to revel in our fabulous variety
to practice, share, and celebrate our magic
to step more fully into our sacred Queer work
and to bless our community and this city.

THE CAULDRON
is an intimate gatherette
(space is limited!)
to vision, plan, and organize
a larger Queer Magic gathering
to take place in 2008.

THE CAULDRON
is an immersive container
where a posse of self-empowered instigators
can build trust, hang out, spark ideas
and get down to some serious play
this September 21-23 (that's soon!).

THE CAULDRON
will be held in a residential garden paradise
(the fabulous Chicken Ranch in North Portland)
where we will cook / dance / circle / chant / pray
laugh / plan / drum / dream / scheme together.

THE CAULDRON
like Queer Magic itself
is a co-created, DIY, hands-on experience
where Structure and Chaos make passionate love
in the back seat of a speeding convertible
with Spirit at the wheel
in a chiffon scarf and big sunglasses.

THE CAULDRON
will demonstrate that organizing
can also be organic and orgasmic
and the planning process
indistinguishable from the party.

THE CAULDRON
is a seedbed for an ongoing
community of magical practice
whose work is barely revealed
and whose potential is immeasurable.

THE CAULDRON
will culminate
in an Autumn Equinox event
for the whole community
on Sunday, September 24 (details to come).

THE CAULDRON
is not for tourists
or do-me queens
or scaredy-cats
or those with rigid expectations.

THE CAULDRON
is for community organizers
and other magical practitioners
at any level of experience
who share the vision for a Queer Magic gathering
and want to form a committed working circle
and an ongoing community of practice.

J O I N U S ! ! !

LOGISTICS
The Cauldron begins Friday evening, September 21
and ends Sunday evening September 23.

You can camp at the Chicken Ranch,
or you can sleep at home if you live in Portland,
or we can find you a spot at someone's house.

Registration is $25 to 75 sliding scale
and includes seven cooperatively prepared meals.

REGISTRATION
To register your intention to attend,
come to the next meeting
in person or by phone

Nomenus Great Circle

Hi-

Nomenus, the organization that owns and manages the Sanctuary in Wolf Creek has semi annual business meetings, called Great Circles, to decide the business affairs of the Corporation. The next Great Circle is to be held in Portland over the Martin Luther King weekend, January 19th, 20th, and 21st 2008.

At this point, we are looking to enlist local faeries to help with the logistics of the meeting. We need a place to hold comfortably somewhere between 15 and 40 people. If a fee is involved, it helps to make it as minimal as possible. The Nomenus Chief Financial Officer can give a letter for tax purposes to an owner donating all or part of the usual fees for a rented space. It helps enormously to have kitchen facilities available to GC.

We are anticipating having several members come to Portland for GC, who will need a place to stay. If anyone can put up GC visitors, please let me know.

Integrating food into a three day meeting can be difficult. There was one Great Circle where Path did a fabulous job of preparing the food in advance and essentially catering Great Circle. An unfortunate effect of this was that he could not participate fully in the meeting, although he did participate as much as he wanted.

I am volunteering to serve as Kitchen Queen for GC, and would love help! The way Path did it, almost all of the food was prepared at non-meeting times and then brought to the meeting, meaning that food people could be at almost all of the meeting. This is the method I would like to use. The menu I am envisioning will be simple, and address dietary concerns (Vegan, Veggie, allergies, etc.).

It is important to know how many people to expect for Great Circle. If you are planning on attending, please let me or the Caretaking Community at the Sanctuary know to expect you. Since the event in question is several months off, I will be posting periodic reminders of this.

I realize that “who can be a member of Nomenus” is an issue that has and continues to cause hurt feelings. I am posting below two sections from the Nomenus By-laws.

The first is the Mission Statement: “Nomenus exists to create, preserve and manage places of cultural/spiritual sanctuary, for radical Faeries and their friends to gather in harmony with nature, for renewal, growth and shared learning.”

When the By-laws were first adopted this is what it was:
“Article III. (original wording) [The specific purposes for which this corporation is organized are to establish and maintain a place for religious worship and assembly.]”

The second is the wording concerning membership:

Section 1. Qualifications and Number of Members/Directors.

A. A member of this corporation is any gay-identified man who signs and presents to an officer of the corporation, or another authorized person, a membership form agreeing to the purposes of the corporation as stated in Article III of these bylaws. In addition members of Nomenus agree to involve themselves actively in the implementation of the corporation’s goals and purposes, using the consensus decision-making process as defined in Article IV, Section 3.E.1-6, of these bylaws. Members further agree that to continue membership must be renewed annually.

I am not posting this thread to open up a discussion of Nomenus membership. I think that an ongoing discussion of membership is important and ask that a separate thread devoted to its discussion be posted.

Wood Gathering Gathering

Hi-

We are planning a play-bor gather-ette to collect firewood for the upcoming winter. The gatherette will happen over Labor Day weekend from Thursday August 31st through Tuesday September 4th.

This event is part of the move toward energy sufficiency, using renewable sources (wood) of heat, and economically sustainable means (gathering rather than buying firewood) at the Sanctuary. The wood gathered will be used to heat Garden House, Teresa, and Halston - discontinuing the regular use of propane in T&H.

All those who share the desire to lessen the Sanctuary's dependence on the petro-chemical and electric power industries and would like to contribute their labor are welcome. We can promise tasty meals to satisfy varied dietary requirements (vegan, vegetarian, allergies, etc.) featuring fresh produce from the Sanctuary Garden.

We are seeking people with chainsaw experience, workers who know how to lift, load, and carry wood safely, and participants of all genders and affectional preferences. Please, please, please call the Sanctuary at 541-866-2678 to inform us of your plans to come so adequate food may be on hand when everyone arrives.

It would be totally fabulous to have massage people who would like to participate in easing the aches and pains of joyful labor. Likewise, if anyone would like to organize ride sharing from Portland, Seattle, the Bay Area, etc. that would be too cool.

The weather promises to be really hot during the day and coolish in the evenings. Gloves and most wood gathering equipment will be available. If you have saws (chain and/or hand) that you would like to bring, it would be most appreciated. Spare tents and some (minimal) bedding are available for people needing them. It is Oregon, so bring at least something that you can wear in the rain, which if you bring you will not need.

If you have any questions, please call the Land at 541-866-2678.
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense. FREE THEM NOW!

FREE THEM NOW!
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.

Um... there's a glitch in the system!!!

Hey there guys- I don't even normally belong to this tribe but thought I'd join for a second to throw this topic in. Somehow I received this invitation... I don't know how...

"Nomenus and Wolf Creek Sanctuary Invite You: To Experience the Rebirth of the Sacred And the Union of Sex and Spirit over the Summer Solstice in men loving men (gay male) space.

At the height of the Sun God's power in the first days of summer, we welcome the wheel and gather to create a gathering open to loving, nurturing, supporting, accepting, exploring, and expanding Our Nature as Radical Faeries.

Together we can be Open, Present, Accepting, Loving, Connected, and Radical.

As the emblazoned sun envigorates the ripening earth with the tender nuzzle of a morning hard-on, as buds swell into luscious bloom and begin to fruit as we all start to get that well-known itch to get up and shake it, buck-ass naked, with all of our crazy family, we send out this call.

We send it in all directions: East West North South far above and down below: hear it, and GET HERE!

We send out this call to all who are likely to hear and to the unlikely as well to our Men loving Men Radical Faerie family:

To each one we say: hear this call!"

There was more to it but you understand the point. It doesn't ever make it too clear that it's no girls allowed/ faggot only space. I mean I realize that and appreciate the value of having this gathering and all (don't get me wrong and get your panties in a bunch some of ya...) but at first when I read it I thought it might be a call for a new added gathering. Then I reaized the dates and of course it'e the Men's Gathering.
Anyho...
Just thought it was funny P-Raw got invited to the Men's Gathering.

Love ya - mean it...

Please please please! Pin and I need a ride from Seattle to Portland. We have a ride from Portland from Aqua, but we need a ride from Seattle. Taking the train is no problem but a ride would be cheery and swell!

I reprinted this from the Wolf Creek Tribe Site, cause this issue is not going away
in response to the post I say:

I can't believe ya'll are still beating this dead horse. You misogynist fuckers let's keep it simple, you all will and have paid for your bigotry, look at Jerry the Fucking manipulative bitch Faerie, I don't support our jail system Jerry, but you got you Kharma didn't you you facist sexist fuck, hope they didn't left you off easy, next time I see your demon eyes, you will know who the lord is, and you will cringe in fear at the truth I will speak. You old tired fuckers, you have all cursed yourselves, and that beautiful peice of earth, and you will suffer, as I have suffered for your "ALWAYS gotta BE RIGHT" intentions, I found myself with the faeries, bacause I thought we were two spirits, but at times it shames me to admit my roots. You think your so damn smart so fucking logical, with your back and forth bullshit, bullshit is what you stand on, and in false profits.
I pray to the Goddess that she comes down from her web and sucks the tiny bits of soul left in your bodies, so that you will leave the earth and allow the real revolutionary faggots to take there rightful place in the prophacy, til then shame on you suffer suffer suffer, you have cursed yourselves.

How about a Faerie Tale, we all like Faerie Tale's don't we?
Jerry the Faerie last year was sitting in his car with John Burnside in the passenger side, about to leave or maybe not, Two women drove up they waited for about five minutes then pulled up next to Jerries car, Jerry supposably made lewd gestures like don't rush me or something, at that very momment the car behind Jerry was leaving so the women just staid in that spot along side Jerry til the other car could get out. Jerry musta not seen the other car, because he then procedded to slam open his door against thier car "you goddamn stupid women!" he slammed the door over and over cursing them and calling them stupid women. It dented thier car, they were scared so they called the cops. And here is Jerry with John Burnside (shameful), tring to play innocent, well not only the women saw the situation but also a lot of pedestrians! They arrested Jerry and took him to jail and charged him with assault it was all over the gay rags, that Jerry was found guilty and had to serve some amount of time and probation. But it was very scandalious because of Jerries involvment with keeping women out of Nomenus (kinda like Mark Foley scandal in the Republican party). I personally have no respect for that man to me I see his spirit and it is a vampiristic demon, I see people's true forms, it ain't christian it's being in tune with my over soul, and it's one of my many powers. He used his care providing job with Harry Hay and John Burnside to cap[itailize to give himself authority, like something that should be a humble offering should give you power?! Jerry never considered that during the time of Harry's passing and now things in the faerie tribe have evolved leaps and bounds, and that these old ways these so called traditions, had become old hat! Our generation and other more aware generations within the faerie tribe saw this coming and were ready, accepting, loving, and joyful to welcome the bio women, trannnies, intersexed, inbetweens, children and two-spirits. The ones who didn't get the memo, are the older monsters too blind with power in the tribe, the ones who pretend to be shamen to get dick, the fakes who are clinging to some time when they actually could get laid without manipulating, or prostituing younger faeries with drugs. These are people like Jerry the Faerie, and I have a short list of others that are basically demon faerie pimps and johns, using spirituality and the land for power and personal gain.
So a question my fellow faerie "breathren" how does he get to keep any creditability, especially after his arrest for such a blatent extreme sexist attack? Because all the Nomenus men are afraid to admit they are wrong completly and utterly wrong! About thier rules and regulations, they are sooooo scared of letting go of thier power, that that power is going to destroy them. Like any government it has become corrupt and stalemate a good ol boy system where every one pats everyone on the back, and "knows that they are RIGHT,"
time for them to claim reponsibility for ruining a beautiful movement DID YOU HEAR THAT YOU NOMENUS FACISTS ARE DESTROYING A BEAUTIFUL MOVEMENT"and it's time for every faerie to stand together and hold this small core accountable for thier facist and misogynist behavior!
As for the Christian thing, and my "judgement" (which is many other people's opinion of Nomenus, ya blind fools) well if you wanna act like Ceaser or Pontious Pilot, or the hippie critical demons you are better realize that some messiahs are gunna come round and take your ass out, I am not ashamed of my destiny, and the fact that my path is similer to any of the other gurus who stood out against male privlidge and slavery!

What's the deal with the land in front of the sanctuary - along the road, with the crappy old trailer on it? Wasn't that/isn't that for sale? (and how big is it? does it abut the sanctuary? etc.)
What if (big if) it were somehow purchased and made "sister" land? Could be - doesn't have to be a Nomenus thing. This could serve as the primarey sanctuary for bio-female fairies (and/or anyone that identifies as faerie w/o necesarily identifying as male-faggot). That way either could have periods of same-sex only space - without necesarily displacing visitors of the opposite sex.
And yet they could support one another.
Does this make sense to anyone?

A Call to Celebrate Samhain at Wolf Creek (10/28-11/2)

An Ancient Story lives in our blood and souls:
Up before the sun, bundled in thick layers against the frigid cold, you stoke last night’s coals to a crackling good morning. Water set to boil, you go about rechecking the things gathered to go with you on the journey. You loaded the wagon last night as the sun set and the night breezes sent shivers through you, now you check over them to be sure it’s all in order; shocks of dead weeds, spent crops and molded thatches of roof removed and repaired. All things to be offered to the fire as they no longer serve the flow of your sustenance. Along with these is a bounty, packaged with delicate care; the excess of your crops that cannot be preserved to survive the winter, the four sheep and one pig you know you won’t be able to feed through to spring are together in a separate pen from the rest of the stock, gifts of wool, grains and craft. All of this excess is coming with you to the gathering of Samhain, not because it does not serve, but because it is the bounty with which you have been blessed and now have the honor to share with your ancestors and tribe through feast and through gift.

-Questions and Challenges:
With what bountiful blessings have you been graced since last you faced the dark, cold reflection of frigid winter’s iced embrace? What sufferings have you wrought, endured; what losses plague you still? as now you approach the full-turned wheel to find you face the fall-thinned veil? Reflect now and acknowledge what new ancestors have been created in the passing of this year, what new allies of Spirit and of Power have been gained through the loss, the pain, the forever-gone of friends once flesh now passed on to the wisdom and peace of life beyond.

Examine your load…What load? you hear you ask. That load that without which we would be nothing in particular and therefore everything Now -- that load that is the game you call your Life and worries, your goals, priorities and concerns, your blah blah blah ….. it sits on our shoulders so perfectly perched that we often forget that we choose to carry it. Take it off for a moment and become present to your grudges, your fears, your beliefs, your preconceived’s, your heartsongs, your hurts, your pains, your joys, your sorrows and gains, and hold them to the light of loving examination. Among all of this hubbub are gems of both discord and of harmony, things that hinder you and things that help. Open yourself to the beauty of all that comprises ‘you’ and prepare to share as you are part of your bounty.

Now is the time when the Earth Mother offers the opportunity to recognize that which does not serve and to recognize those blessings of which we have joyous excess, to honor these and to share them with her, with our ancestors, and with each other. A sacrifice is not just made of things we do or do not like, it is of anything whose space we need to clear up so as to allow for further growth in its stead. Identify and Honor your Ancestors, both the newly acquired and those of old, for they are our allies of wisdom and council as we craft the worlds. Clear the way to pure magicks and divine your intentions. Prepare your Self and hereby find that you are cordially, profanely and sacredly invited to join hands and breath to craft together a Circle of Magick Folk; of Fae, of Ghoul, of Witch, of Human, of Mutant, of Man, of Beast, of Goddess, of Corporeal and Spirit allies, of lovers, of strangers, of family, and of friends. Come to the Land that welcomes our conSpiracy and our Circle, come Home to celebrate Samhain, the year’s final harvest, the thinning of the veils, a homecoming of Ancestry and memory. Join hands together as our laughter rings amidst our tears and we step through the Door to the Dark.

“we are all children of the Great Spirit, we all belong to Mother earth; our planet is in great trouble and if we keep carrying old grudges and do not work together, we will all perish.”

-Dates and Registration:

You’re calendar is just dying to know, so here they are: Samhain will be held SatyrsDay 10/28/06 through Thursday 11/02/06. You are invited to arrive and make camp Friday 10/27, ground, join in dinner, and sleep to be rested for opening Circle on Saturday (this is not yet coordinated, so if you have inspiration and would like to pitch in to craft opening circle, have your piece ready when you arrive. We make this gathering)
Pre-Registration is highly encouraged as it helps us to get the abundAnce flowing for the gathering, starts to give an idea for how many guests the Land can expect in the first few days. Suggested donation is 35 dollars a day (More if you can. Less if you can’t. No one turned away for lack of funds). Give early, give often. The gathering we are creating is formed and funded by those of us who attend it, the money we give supports our needs while at the gathering and supports the needs of the Land that is hosting our reveries. Don’t be shy about giving what you have, money or otherwise. We make this gathering. A printable pre-registration form is at the end of this call, you can mail your registration with any pre-gathering donations to Kyle Diesner, 2213 SE Stark St, Portland, Or, 97214 (no really, it’ll make it to the Land). Any more information you need regarding the Sanctuary (contact info, etc) can be found at www.nomenus.org

-We protect the Lands

It’s recently been discovered that the land surrounding the sanctuary is under threat of logging. It has yet to be auctioned off to a specific company but the time is short and the time is now to act if we are to prevent this. There will be a circle held at the gathering to discuss ritual and other possibilities of action. We are invoking the spirit of Spotted Owl to make its presence known in those lands as our ally in protecting the forests. We will also be walking the perimeter of the Land and marking our property lines in a spell of protection and compassion. Any resources you may have to help this process are welcomed and appreciated.

-Logistics

The kitchen is the heart of the gathering and is yet not being focalized. If you are called to focus the kitchen for a night, for a day for the week, please make this known when you register. We all do our part to construct this gathering.

Arrive with the knowledge that it is up to *all* of us to co-create this gathering. Arrive prepared to engage and participate. Arrive with the willingness to instigate community. ritual, meals, art, sex, laughter, cohesion, magick, it’s OURS to make…..

Pack it in, Pack it out. Earth Mother loves you, pick up your own mess.

Rain Happens, bring tarps and rain gear.

It’s fucking cold! Bring layers, plenty of bedding, less attachment to getting laid and more to making friends and staying warm. (sex during the day and by the fire, gleefully encouraged)

The Zombie Nurses, while a good idea, have had a struggle to maintain momentum. All of the supplies are available, all that’s wanting is a willing and able coordinator(s).

If you have felt the pull to coordinate something at a gathering in previous years but have not been sure of how to go about it, or whether you would be “up to the task”, find an ally who you see leading, talk to the ones you “know” can do it and step up to your own yearnings. The gathering happens cuz we make it, there are no designated or voted-in leaders or facilitators, we all choose our roles and are supported as we create our support. Gathering, like Life, is best done Actively. Your participation is highly encouraged.

Come prepared to camp. Special needs space is for faeries who required an in indoor sleeping arrangement for medical purposes, and is limited. Please contact the Land to raise awareness to your special need.

The Land, and the Gatherings held there, honor a consensus-based decision making process. Over the past many years the gathered communities and the community on the Land have reached agreements, through consensus, regarding “a few items that you should please not bring with you to the Sanctuary”. They are as follows:

-Speed, of any kind, in you or on you (that includes your car)
-Violence or Intolerance
-Pets or Familiars*
-Synthetic body care products (the drains empty into the creek and into the soil, please help keep them clean

(*”please leave your pets at home” is a restriction commonly ignored or, for some, impossible to comply with. If you dissent to this request, feel oppressed by this request, or are made indignant by this request; it is further requested that you bring your dissent by way of communication, by calling a circle and bringing the issue about in a venue in which it can be addressed and shifted to best suit all present. Please honor the process by which we honor ourselves and do not bring your pets to the sanctuary during the gathering. If it is impossible for you to leave your pet behind, a kennel is available in Merlin, the next town south, at which you can board your furry loved on for $10/day. It is called Creekside Boarding, Donna is the lady’s name who runs it and the number is (541) 471-7144. Thank you for helping the gathering to flow peacefully and smoothly)

-Whispered rumors of things to come:

Dinner Daily and Deliciously prepared (by us!, that means you, which is us!), Faery-Tale Tea (bring your stories, memories, traditions to share over a cup of tea), Intentional Libations Night, kNOw Talent Show (hosted by the fateful Rock, Paper, Scissor Sisters), the construction of a Community Ancestor Altar (bring tokens, talismans, pictures of ancestors that you would be willing to have on a community altar out in the weather), Samhain Ritual, an Interactive Community Divination EXTRAVAGANZA!!! (bring your decks, runes, card, and oracles that are comfortable being touched by community hands)…..

The time has come, autumn is upon us and the time to celebrate the cold, the dark, the cozy, the rotting, the fuzzy, the dead, the bouncy, the burning, the moist, the coming of the night is here. Bring your love, your Sight, your intention….

See you at the Fire….

Bliss,

SHAMEFULL FAERIE VILLAGE SIGN @ SF Pride

I was shocked and embarrassed to walk by a sign at yesterdays SF Pride which read; "Radical Faeries Only"...
Is that what the Faeries are about? Segregation? Exclusion? Clickishness? Us Only? Only the Annointed Enter Here?

Is Faerie Village now succumbing to the same anti-inclusionary philosophies which I hear plague Nominus and Wolf Creek?

How disappointing. I hope the sign was put upby the overall SF Pride organization by mistake, but I suspect that it was put up by some snobbish faerie..

I think this topic warrants discussion: is it not up to the indiviiudal to self-identify as a faerie, or is there a hazing-committee now?
I thought the RF's were where everybody was welcome, regardless of their race, their class, their fashion, their pecsize, or whatever...

I hope someone who is more informed then me will respond and tell me what they think, or, if they know, what on Earth the philosophy behind this sign might be.

Homophobic Police Assault In Santa Cruz

The following is a letter of protest sent to the Santa Cruz City Council for the police assault of Shane (Tammy) Maxfield.

Santa Cruz City Council,

I am writing to protest the assault and false arrest carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield by Santa Cruz Police Officer Brierly. A description of that arrest from an eyewitness follows this letter.

You as the City Council are the boss of the police and hold direct responsibility for the outrageous violations of civil liberties that are routinely carried out by your police department.

Yours is a police a department that has been successfully sued for its violations of free speech rights, a department that has violently broken up a protest against the war in Yugoslavia, a department that purposely targets activists for harassment, brutality and false arrests, a department that murdered activist John Dine in cold blood, a department that has been caught spying on and infiltrating anti-war organizations, a department that purposely targets the poorest of the poor for harassment, brutality and false arrests under the direct orders of the anti-homeless laws that you as a City Council have passed, a police department that targeted the Blue Lagoon, a gay bar, for special homophobic treatment eventually costing the City in a settlement of well over a million dollars.

The homophobic hate crime that Officer Brierly has now carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield is just one in a long list of crimes carried out by your police department. Your encouragement of past crimes has led directly to this most recent one. The Santa Cruz Police department is sending out a strong message that Santa Cruz is not safe for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community and that the City no longer wants their tourism dollars.

I demand that Officer Brierly be immediately fired from the police force for his hate crime against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield and that Officer Brierly be jailed on the charge of felony assault for his criminal violence and reckless endangerment of the life of a person suffering with HIV/AIDS.

Sincerely, Steven Argue
Subject: case #065-04163
To: dao@co.santa-cruz.ca.us
District Attorney Bob Lee: May 3, 2006

I am a witness in the case of Shane(Tammy) Maxfield, case #065-04163. Shane was handcuffed and forced to sit down against the chainlink fence on Pacific Ave/Church for "directing traffic." He was actually helping a friend and another witness, David Bliss jump David's battery to move his van out of the handicapped space.

The officer refused to give me his name and badge number. I begged him twice not to arrest Shane as he is severely ill with AIDS and has just started a dibilitating HIV cocktail of Trevada and Sustiva. He laughed at me and said "That's not gonna happen." I told him Shane might die of stress in jail and he guffawed and shrugged me off.

It was apparent the officer realized he hadn't charged Shane with anything yet as he pulled Shane up by his coat, slammed him against the fence and forced the top of Shane's head to barely touch him. He said: "Now I've got you for battery." This was in full public view of at least 40 witnesses at 1 PM on April 25,2006. Before the sergeant could take stories from witnesses Shane was put in the police car and taken to jail. His arraignment is May 15, 2006. The jail personnel were sympathetic and thought the whole incident ridiculous.

It is a travesty of justice to allow a police officer with NO communication skills arrest a severely ill man for helping a friend (the van was already jumped and ready to go when the arresting officer on the beat got there) This officer should be removed from the police force as he is nothing more than a thug in a uniform. He is guilty of police brutality, false arrest and battery upon Shane not the other way around.

The time has come at last, with the loosening of the grip that winter has held here, and advent of the spring season, what has become unearthed? Why yes it is ZOMBIE NURSE! and it wants YOU!!!
They shall help to maintain the balance between personal freedom and community safety, in an objective, non-judgmental capacity, by providing emergency response and by facilitating conflict resolution and effective communications at Wolf Creek.

This is a fun and functional way to plug into the gatherings here at Wolf Creek, check out the link below for further information. All are welcome!

Please note that I am speaking only for myself. The "Yes Grrls" in their Portland incarnation have not agreed on a statement for Great Circle -- in fact, we have not yet agreed on our membership, our intentions, the name of our group, or our method of making decisions.

My perception is that this group is in its very early stages -- like an egg in which a mystery is forming. Premature demands for clarity or remote participation seem likely to result in frustration and disappointment for all. What an egg needs to hatch is warmth, safety, and patience.

In this I think I can speak for all who have participated in our circles: we appreciate and are nurtured by the love, goodwill and prayers of our larger community.

Sisters,
A great Muggle Holiday is soon upon us. It's the time of year when many people are putting forth new and good intentions. The energy level around this is huge, and I would love to come together with others for a singing bowl meditation, and prayer time. My home is very small, but is open to anyone interested...or perhaps someone has a better space?
Hawk, I hope you get this.
To everyone, best wishes, as always; love, Magnolia

There is now a Tribe called RadDish Submissions. There are already some photos posted. The Tribe is set to open admission so anyone wishing to join and post may do so.

I will more than likely only remain as moderator. Angie O'Sperm and Beast WillIAM are, at present, the only ones I am aware of that will be involved with decisions as to what will be published.

My thinking is that anything posted here is considered as material for publication. My personal feelings are that those questions need to be discusssed with WillIam and Angie O'Sperm.

Also, this:

ANOUNCEMENT
For Current Release

NEWS FLASH!
New Staff Changes for the RadDish.

It has been recently brought to the attention of Nomenus Co Co that
the on the land staff no longer wish to carry the burden of
publishing the RadDish, and has asked for someone else to take on
this responsibility (as of October) so that they may peruse
publication of one (or more?) issues of RFD.

With that in mind, Vaughn and I (BeastWillIAm) have agreed to take
on editing and Layouts for the RadDish. Printing and distribution
still to be determined…

With that in mind I have set up a site for use of those of us now
taking on this responsibility and anyone who would like to
participate with Articles, Graphics, Cartoons, Poems Etc…

There will also be Discussions of things like how to possibly
distribute the RadDish electronically to those who want that… or
format changes (that is not currently the plan)… etc…
You may go to the site and join … (Yahoo Email NOT required) or
email me and I will issue an Invite with simple to follow directions
on how to find us and get involved.

The new Site is:
groups.yahoo.com/group/RadishStaff/
the email for the moderator is:
nomenusradish@yahoo.com
my email is:
beastwilliam@yahoo.com
Vaughn's email is:

Hope to see you there…
a non-demoninational non-dogmatic mystery church dedicated to the understanding that those of us who identify as fey or two-spirit or radical faeries or queer pagans or gay wiccans or whatevuh have an important role to play on this planet at this point in time: to heal to celebrate to commune.

This tribe, this church, is designed to for the participation of ALL faeries and faerie-like individuals. It has nothing specifically to do with either Wolf Creek Sanctuary or Nomenus, though it of course supports the existence and support of all both.

It is more than Radical Faerie: it is All Fey.

This Mystery Church will continue to grow and understand itself.

Membership is free.
Support is welcome.
More brilliance to follow.

Great Circle

Hey all -- I sent the following message to nomenus@budget.net to be read at Great Circle, if it gets there in time.....

Hey this is Amper with just a quick something to say about the status
of the "Sisters of Nomenus/Yessgurlzz" or whatever it is we're thought
of/called.....

We have nothing to report at this time. We will be meeting at the Land
during the Midsummer's Night Magic Gathering, and hopefully at that
point we will achieve something that approaches a quorum or consensus
on who we are and where we're going. Until then, we'll keep meeting
and thinking and dreaming.

Probably we'll have something to report at the Fall Great Circle. But
speaking as myself, just Amper, I have to say that as long as we're
meeting and thinking and dreaming ourselves into existence, there's no
real need to report anything.

If somebody else beat me to the punch in terms of getting a message
through to Great Circle today, then so be it. This is just me sticking
in my own two(spirit)sense.

I wish y'all the best,
Amper

Words r powerful! written or spoken.
Sanning the discusions I see a lot ov negativity and picking apart ov ideas. I have no expectation ov all emotions expresses to be white light and positivity, but what do we all WANT to create together? Is this just another opportunity for faerie banter? I hope not.
I am personally interested in finding others aligned with my vision ov a supportive, sustainable community with whom I can work magick on multiple planes ov exictence for the greater good ov all creatures and the planet.
What is your vision?

Minutes from the first meeting of the Yes Girlz! (F.K.A. Sisters of Nomenus)

These minutes are submitted by cobb. these are only a rough summary of words expressed with intention, passion and eloquence. forgive the copyist if you feel you were misquoted.

May 4, 2005
Shangrifuckinla, Wolf Creek Sanctuary

present: Amanda, Luna, Kohl, Sidda, Randirella, Otto, cobb, Megan, Donniy, Ender Buttercup, Timsh'l, Synergy, Lucyfur

the circle opened with silence and the sound of the rain hitting the roof.

Otto began by relating the tradition in some native american cultures of a sisterhood which supported the activities of the rest of tribe. (i would like to ask Otto to contribute a version of that story to this forum.)

cobb: i am not interested in being part of a dogmatic organization. what we are embarking on will be hard work, but i want to participate only if it's done with love and a fun spirit.

Synergy: passes around a deck of the cosmic tarot-we all draw a card. suggests the name "who we are."

Lucyfur: i feel connected to this land.
